As the name suggests, Mid-City is centrally located and easily accessible to all areas of New Orleans. Residents enjoy close proximity to City Park, the city’s largest green space at over 1,300 acres, home to the world’s largest collection of mature live oaks. The park features the New Orleans Museum of Art, Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Botanical Gardens, Tad Gormley Stadium, tennis complex, equestrian facilities, golf course, dog park, Popp Fountain, Storyland, and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, with antique wooden horses listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mid-City offers restaurants, bars, shops, schools, and churches along Canal Street and Carrollton Avenue. Streetcars returned to Canal Street in 2004, linking the Central Business District to cemeteries and City Park. While Esplanade Ridge was spared, the rest of Mid-City suffered moderate to heavy flooding during Hurricane Katrina. It has since rebuilt and preserved its architectural charm, making it one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods.

The Fairgrounds Racetrack in Mid-City hosts seasonal horseracing and the world-famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival each spring.

Bayou St. John includes parts of Esplanade Ridge and Parkview. The scenic bayou, once used for drainage, is now lined with historic homes. Notable landmarks include the 1799 Pitot House and the Old Spanish Custom House. Near Cabrini High School and the Moss Street bridge, “Christmas on the Bayou” is held annually.

The area features a range of homes, from grand estates to Craftsman bungalows. A strong neighborhood association, walkability, nearby shops, Whole Foods, and access to City Park and major highways make this a top choice for residents.

Esplanade Ridge, with wide Esplanade Avenue as its spine, is home to antebellum mansions and the Edgar Degas House. North of Broad Street, early 20th-century homes reflect architectural classicism.
